About this site and the JMA intensity scale

This site shows the latest earthquakes in Japan: magnitude, focal depth, the epicentre on a map and the maximum seismic intensity per prefecture. The data are reports of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) relayed by P2P地震情報; if it is unavailable, backup sources (JMA directly and USGS) are used.

Magnitude and intensity are different things

Magnitude describes the energy of an earthquake and is one number for the whole event. Intensity (JMA scale, shindo, 震度) shows how strongly the shaking was felt at a particular place, so it differs between prefectures.

The JMA scale

0–1: barely felt; 2: felt by many indoors; 3: noticeable, hanging objects sway; 4: furniture moves, small items may fall; 5−, 5+: hard to walk, damage possible; 6−, 6+: hard to stand, weak buildings may collapse; 7: the highest level, severe destruction.
